Irena Sendlerowa, a Polish heroine of the Holocaust, has died at 98 years of age.
Irena was a member of the clandestine Zegota organization, an underground effort that assisted Jewish citizens in Nazi occupied Poland. She is credited with saving the lives of over 2,500 Jewish children. (More than twice the number of lives saved by Oscar Schindler!) But Irena did not see her own deeds as heroic, while speaking of herself and her accomplishments she said:
"I am not a hero. A hero is someone doing extraordinary things. What I did was not extraordinary. It was a normal thing to do."

Hmmm... What can I say about my good friend Tim (Morosoph)?
Well, he's been maintaining his blog here at StumbleUpon for over four years, and in that time he's accumulated a wealth of interesting websites and resources. He also makes generous contributions to the forums around SU, whether it's sharing insight in the Philosophy forum, technical assistance in the core forums, or educating people about the merits of free, open source software in his own Free Software forum.
In my own experience, I've found him to be an intelligent, kind and sincere individual. A little bit quirky at times, but overall, a truly admirable person. :)

This article's author, Digits, is such a deeply kindred spirit. Sometimes it's a little creepy just how close we are to being two peas in the same pod!

A fun article that I wrote for Newsvine. It takes a quick look at all twelve signs of the zodiac. Here's the entry for Aquarius and Pisces...
"Aquarius ~ The Water Bearer
Symbolized by a water bearer, Aquarius is often mistakenly considered a water sign, but the Aquarian element is actually air. Gemini and Libra are the first two air signs; Gemini representing intellectual curiosity, and Libra being where we share our ideas with another person. Which makes Aquarius, the third and last of the air signs, the place where our ideas evolve to the level of group concerns. Aquarians appreciate uniqueness and originality in all things, and they place a particularly high value on freedom and creativity.
Pisces ~ The Fishes
And finally we come to Pisces, the last of the twelve signs. Pisceans are the mystics of the zodiac, and for this reason they're often a little misunderstood. It's in this sign that material reality makes contact with the divine, and this inherent spiritual connection can be a Piscean's greatest blessing and curse all rolled into one. Until the fishes understand the importance of balancing spiritual and material reality, without neglecting one in favor of the other, Pisces people are sometimes more escapist in nature than they are tuned into the realm of spirituality. Although, Pisces is also one of the most compassionate and imaginative signs in the zodiac."

From today until May 2nd, giving this page a thumbs up will help to raise a charitable contribution for the National Forest Foundation (NFF). The NFF is a non-profit group that sponsors and organizes conservation efforts to preserve the country's beautiful national forests. It's a simple way to celebrate Earth Day. :)

Unfortunately, vitamin bashing has become something of a celebrated tradition in Western (allopathic) medicine. Every so often a new wave of scare tactics and misinformation is released into the general public, complete with ominous warnings about the dangerous consequences that accompany nutritional supplements.
The latest batch of anti-vitamin sentiment comes from a group called the Cochrane Collaboration. This group only disseminates information that's been published in electronic databases like MEDLINE, a database which has systematically refused to index specific types of peer reviewed medical research and information... like anything that's ever been published in the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine. Orthomolecular medicine is a branch of medical science that deals specifically with the prevention and treatment of disease with nutritional supplements, in other words, a branch of medical science that pertains directly to the use of vitamins!
This type of "research" is disingenuous at best. For objective research into vitamins and other micronutrients, the Linus Pauling Institute is first rate.

I'd like to offer my condolences to Leslie's surviving family and friends. The world has lost a very special person, but now the heavens are all the richer.
Namaste.
